Sanseria Murray, experienced by many as Mama Star, lives to awaken, ignite, heal, and propel everyone she encounters through her words, her workshops, and her embraces. Sanseria (she/they) is a word nerd, and lover of dark chocolate, who considers themself a storyteller with deep conviction that the only way to our collective liberation is by living with a transformative and restorative, radical love ethic. Their first book, Morning Star Rising: a book of poetry, was published in 2021. Currently, Sanseria teaches middle school theater arts, hosts workshops and retreats, and spends their time writing, creating, loving , laughing with their whole self and learning what it means to lean into rest, especially as a Black, Queer person. Sanseria resides in San Antonio, TX.
"The dawn is wrapped in this beautiful reflection of words. I feel the healing coursing through the text like a confluence of spirit, virtue and an assurance that comes with spending time and care with oneself. Morning Star Rising is immersive and gentle in pieces like, I Love You and Mirror; it is urgent and weighty in verses like Silence and The Lion Declaration. Each poem is filled with rays of light, bringing us to the summit of understanding."
Andrea "Vocab" Sanderson
San Antonio Poet Laureate 2020-2023
"Sanseria Murray is a brilliant facilitator, creating a much-needed space for people to come and lay down their burdens through a poetic process of lament. She is also much more than a facilitator—she is a poet, a teacher, an overcomer, a soul coach, a dynamic multi-genre creative and a true patron of the arts. Sanseria Murray is a blessing just to be around. You’ll discover that quickly if you’re ever in her presence or simply get to hear her voice. Or read her writing. Or watch one of her plays. Love and Lament is a space where she does all of that, meanwhile, seamlessly inviting folks into their own process, pain and the victory of Love. "
